Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

If you are quite like me and love all things talismanic, symbolic and/or esoteric, you will find this a worthy addition to your collection. The first part of the book is what I really consider the meat and potatoes - here, you will find pictures of the described talismans and some brief and thoroughly interesting dialogue on their known origins and meanings. I found the Kindle version a bit cumbersome, though. Even though the text is nicely linked to it's corresponding page of diagrams, once on the page of diagrams, it is up to the reader to navigate back to the referencing page of text.
The second section of the book is devoted to astrology and a given sign's gem/s, notable sign characteristics, likely career endeavors, love matches, etc. I found this section to be a disappointing departure from it's earlier material. That said, it was somewhat interesting (though not new) and while I could surely argue it's inclusion, I find the whole thing would have gone off much more to my liking with the astrological section omitted.
I knocked a star for the cumbersome nature of the Kindle version and for the awkward inclusion of astrological/zodiacal signs. That said, I'm a fanatic of all things regarding symbology and have added the paperback version of this book to my wish list - I liked the early talismanic material enough that this book will be going into my permanent collection.

The Book of Talismans Amulets and Zodiacal Gems William Thomas Pavitt 9781407766614 Books Reviews
this book has information on what rock is used for what. how it is used and for what purpose. i get books like this to gather information on other religions and what tools are used in them. if you want information on what rock is used for what religion this is ok
Not what I was expecting, this is a general reference of various talismans, et cetera. A bit difficult to match up illustrations on the plates to different items sometimes.
Excellent book - Very useful information for those who want to become more advanced in the practice.
This is an easy to read encyclopedia of symbols and their use in alchemy and hermetic sciences. Nearly every corner is covered with regard to signs, symbols and their meaning. From there, the author provides detailed directions on how to use this information to create ones' own talismans, amulets, and other magical items. He also clearly explains the difference between talismans, amulets, and sigels. A must-have for those interested in experimenting with charms and things metaphysical to elicit positive changes in the 4-square realm. Out of print and hard to find, but worth owning.
Modern books on this subject, which I approached from the point of view of a student of witchcraft, have more to say, better phrasing, more complete information ... I ended up wanting to throw this across the room. Since I got it on , I didn't. But it has no information not easily duplicated by others. books don't precisely take up space on your bookshelf, and it's a free at that. So help yourself, but don't expect to be very pleased by this tome unless you're an archaeologist.
This book, it provides better insight and knowledge in talismans, amulets and zodiacal and their usefulness... I think it that reading this book would help much in your practice... It also demonstrates preparations and prayers. This book contains vital information for practitioner and beginner as well. say beginners... I see this book to be very useful material and give more details about talismans zodiacal understanding. I use it more often and i achieve results. Again, this book may require you have certain background related to this talismans etc... mentor possible if like... this will also enhance your quicker understanding... you can also read it for fun, how you you use it is up to you and what you want have out of it... make it a practice...
I think this is helpful...
Very disappointing for my needs as one who deals with symbols in my art on a daily basis. I was expecting many more images and a broader selection of cultures. More than half the book is devoted to the Babylonian/Greco-Roman zodiac. Very notably absent is any discussion of pre-Christian central/western/northern Europe; the subtitle reads "From Norse runes to Chinese jade, Egyptian scarab to Irish horseshoe...," but I have yet to find ANY mention of Norse or runes in the text itself. Whoever wrote the dust jacket had evidently not read the book. It was cheap enough not to bother trying to return or re-sell it, but my library would not be any less rich without this volume.
