All the Shiny Things A Kate Reid Novel The Kate Reid Series Volume 1 Robin Mahle 9780996683029 Books

This book had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story. There were times I felt like I could even smell the loamy earth, the salty brine of the ocean, and the awesome redwood trees. I actually felt Kate's fear and had to literally stop myself from feeling the pain she often felt. I loved Kate's determination and her thought process. What a wonderfully written story! I don't want to say much more because I don't want to give the story away. If you like mysteries, you're going to love this book! I can't wait to read more from this fabulous author. Thank You Robin Mahle for such a compelling story. I am very much a fan of yours now!

All the Shiny Things A Kate Reid Novel The Kate Reid Series Volume 1 Robin Mahle 9780996683029 Books Reviews

I listened to "All the Shiny Things" rather than reading it. The story was very good and held my interest. Narrators are so important they can ruin a good book by the way they narrate. This narrator was not really bad but through most of the book she was just reading it to listeners. She needs to relax her voice and make it more natural. Getting that out of the way, this is the first book I have read or listened to by Robin Mahle. I am so glad I listened to this first Kate Reid book. I just finished actually reading her second book, "The Law of Five" and will be starting the third in the Kate Reid series of , so far, 8 books. I hope they are as good as the first 2. Plot is good, characters are nicely developed. Glad to find an author that I want to read more of their writing.
I just couldn't get thru this book. For the amount I did read, which was about half, I could literally skip paragraphs and skip quickly thru pages and still know what was going on. Author gets too caught up it WAY too much detail. The book could probably have been half as long as what they wrote and been a better story.
I was looking forward to reading this after reading some of the reviews, but, wow...I was not impressed. Slow plot, random killer/kidnapper. I thought it was ending at least five times and it just kept going...so much drudgery and things that really were not believable...the character was involved way more than she should have been, and an invitation to join the BAU!? Unrealistic. Sorry, but bypass this one...I know I will on any future Kate Reid stories.
All the Shiny Things by Robin Mahle

"I'm a fan of a good series--it's like visiting an old friend."

Katie's life was going great she had a job she loved and a fiancé she was looking forward to marrying until she realized her dreams were more than just nightmares--they were flashbacks of horrors that actually happened to her as a child. The way she deals with the consequences of knowing and the people she meets makes this a book that is hard to put down. (I actually read it in one sitting.)

"I appreciate the developing romance in this book and the fact that the author didn't feel the need to include graphic sex scenes.
This book was so predictable and had a lot of unbelievable things happen. Not the kind of things that were too far out, but things that normal people don't do or normal people don't think in that way. For example *SPOILER* The main character and her boyfriend of 7 years get engaged and then he breaks up with her because he doesn't want her to find the guy that kidnapped her as a child. Really? But of course there's another guy waiting - you guessed it - older, brooding, who instantly (pretty much) falls in love with Kate. *SPOILER OVER* Pretty predictable from the start. As a lifetime avid reader, this book felt like a High Schooler wrote it. I finished the book just so I could review it. JMHO.
Bad writing. As I frequently wonder, do contemporary writers, especially in the mystery/ suspense genre WORK at the writing craft? Do they ever even go to the trouble of looking back over what they have thrown onto the page? I can't believe this writer did, or she would have removed several of the rather juvenile " are you on my side"," I thought you were on my side", " oh, now he is back on my side" statements that were repeated ad nauseam. She would also notice-if she possesses an understanding of our language - that she shifts verb tenses within the same sentence and that she doesn't seem to have a clue about modifying phrases. A wordsmith she is not, for she reveals a VERY limited vocabulary. Perhaps these flaws are the foundation of the poor reviews that simply stated that the book was dull, boring, etc. HOW the story is told is even more important than the story itself, but that standard seems to be ignored to a large degree today. As long as people continue to gush about a poorly written tale, we will continue in our downward spiral of "dummying down" until we don't even have any literary standards. How I wish reviewers would stop giving exemplary ratings to shoddy work!
Powerful is the only word I can use to describe this first book in the Kate Reid series. Kate was abducted when she was a young child – so young in fact that she doesn’t actually remember the event, and her parents have never mentioned any of this to her. She managed to escape her captor after three days, and now as an adult is suffering from terrifying nightmares. She can’t figure out why she keeps having this same horrible nightmare over and over again, and why so often right now? What has triggered this, and what can she do about it? Why did her parents hide the abduction from her all these years? I will not give away any other details of this book, except to say that I could not put it down; and when I finished it, I immediately bought the rest of the series that has been written so far (3 more books). I have already finished Book 2 ("Law of Five") and am on to Book 3 ("Gone Unnoticed"). You can’t miss this series!
