I understand that this book was very controversial for its sexual content. I certainly hope it wasn't so much so that readers are dissuaded from reading it. I actually really enjoyed it, and picked the perfect time to read it. Bad weather was hitting all across the states so the impact of the book was relevant, much more so than the weather person on TV.
The story takes place back in the rich suburbs of NYC. It is a satirical comedy with a punch to the gut. The two families are very close. It takes place in the 1970's and everyone seems to be affected by the tumultuous period. It was as funny as it was shockingly sad.
I loved this book. Mr. Moody is an incredible author. I can't wait to read more of his books. He has also cured me of wanting to live in deep snow/cold areas so my husband is happy. We'll stick to fires, drought and ten year floods in California. Read the book and at least learn what happens in an Ice Storm.

The Ice Storm A Novel Rick Moody 9780316706001 Books Reviews

Not bad, fast read. Walk down memory lane as I grew up in the 1970’s but I ‘m glad I didn’t know people like these characters.
"Be careful what you wish for. You might get it".
Wise words that came to acquire a new meaning as the baby-boomers' children were entering the 70's. Bell-bottoms and mutton-chops were the cutting edge of fashion; Nixon's lies (and not his Kissingerian real-politics and crimes against humanity) were what finally cost him his office; polyester was more expensive and desirable than natural fibers; America was fighting another youth-grinding senseless war - and (for the first time) loosing badly. The swinging sixties came and gone and left behind only discontent and drug habits; New Heaven, Connecticut was Suburbia having everything it had wished for; every morning waking to the American Dream - only to find it hollow and wanting. And there was an ice storm brewing in the horizon. Would its whiteness make everything pure again? Would its crystals make things clearer?

I picked the book after of greatly enjoying Ang Lee's MASTERPIECE movie. I agree with most other reviewers the movie was much more tight and effective - and, in the end, a crisper experience. I can understand how RICK MOODY's writing, with its long-winded phrases, rich likenings and not so subtle metaphors, may seem a bit dated to the 1.3sec zapping generation. However, I think that a slow, joyful reading is needed to do justice to this book.

RECOMMENDED!
Superb writing, captures mid century upper middle class goings on beautifully. Read this after finishing another book that was torture to finish. Reading The Ice Storm was like plunging into a beautiful stream, just what I needed.
So beautifully written with wonderful characters and a deeply dark story of suburbia. I grew up at exactly this time period and it really took me back home again. Thank you, Rick Moody. All of your hard work shows up in every page and delicious word.
Very enjoyable. I lived in that area during the time of the novel, the early 70s, and it captured the time and place very nicely. Beautifully written, and it gives one a lot to think about.
This is my first read of Rick Moody and I found the novel exceptional. I'm a historian and loved his depiction of the early seventies, historically and culturally. The angst of the principal characters makes for a dark read but it is beautifully written and captures the sadness that all of us deal with from time to time. The novel reminded me of Richard Yates' brilliant Revolutionary Road.
Moody has a distinctive descriptive style. He moves the story along using several viewpoints, including that of an omniscient narrator. Characters are realistic for the most part, though not deeply developed. This is not a book in which the reader is likely to strongly sympathize or identify with any of them, and I believe that is the author's intent. There is pathos and dark humor here; but it's more a societal portrait of 1970's suburban discontent, and the novel's effect is strengthened by keeping the reader somewhat removed. Having read the book, I would not like to see the film, because it's hard to imagine that it could come across faithfully.
